Pilates

I confess, I am a pilates addict. I first started training in the Pilates method in 1996. The results were so immediate and so comprehensive, I realized that this form of body-mind exercise was for me, and I couldn't live without it. I am now teaching it and incorporating it into the classes I teach in ballet for children. As a method, it makes tremendous sense. The exercises, when done correctly, are very effective at strengthening all the muscles of the torso, especially the abdominals. In addition, it offers a safe and gradual way of stretching the stiffer muscles of the hamstrings and the back. I have found that it helps build a firm, strong body without the excessive bulk that weightlifting can cause. In addition, as a result of the mental discipline and the breath work, it is as effective at calming one's nerves, and relieving stress, as well as improving alertness.

Specialized equipment in our Pilates room Pilates works for young and old, thin and fat and everyone in between. There are mat exercises and a series of exercises using various pieces of equipment, such as the reformer and the Cadillac. Individualized programs can be designed for almost and fitness level, using the principles and teachings of Joseph Pilates.

We offer an introductory program consisting of a private session with and instructor, and ten mat classes (must be used within a three month limit) for $175. For those who want to work deeper and explore the Pilates Method using the apparatus, private sessions are available by appointment, starting at $70/hour.
